Macronutrients (Macros)

The source of nutrient requirements that vitapro.fit uses has quite conservative views on macronutrient requirements. For example, according to its estimates, 130 grams of carbohydrates per day are enough to cover basic biological needs in carbohydrates of any adult. The respective value for protein is 56 grams per day while for the fat as a whole there are no any requirements. The authors have their scientific reasons to think so, and you can read them if you want to. To make a long story short, these are the lowest possible values, and you should not go below that. Obviously, "the lowest" doesn't mean "recommeneded". Moreover, if you translate those numbers to energy values, you'll suddenly find out that you should consume just around 750 kcal per day in the form of carbohydrates and protein which is ridiculous amount for the majority of healthy people. And if you consume much more calories, then what, should the rest derive from fat? That doesn't sound reasonable.

The entire problem is solved by so-called «macros» approach. It implies that every macronutrient must have a certain share in your energy budget. The most popular scheme suggests that 50pct of your total calories should derive from carbohydrates, 30pct – from fat, and 20pct – from protein. The website uses this scheme by default. However, if you are a registered user, you can change this proportion whatever you like when you record or alter your metrics. These numbers will be the base for the calculation of your macronutrient requirements. As an option, you can discard this "macros" approach and use absolute values as your macronutrient requirements. In that case you should manually set your own nutrient requirements, check corresponding box in your metrics and leave there the macros percentage fields empty.
